South Dakota Auto Insurance

Every state has its own rules and laws regarding auto insurance. However, when it comes to South Dakota auto insurance, there are several regulations in place that are different than all other states. Every driver in the state is required to establish and maintain financial responsibility when they operate a motor vehicle. Residents can obtain their South Dakota auto insurance requirements through the South Dakota Automobile Insurance Plan or another state licensed agency.

South Dakota auto insurance follows a tort system law. This means that when there is an accident in the state, there is always someone found responsible for causing it, and they are required to pay for any damages that occurred as a result.

For drivers, there is a minimum amount of coverage they must carry. South Dakota auto insurance laws require all drivers to carry a policy that includes liability coverage for Bodily Injury, Property Damage, and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury. Coverage requires a minimum of $25,000 for injury to a person, $50,000 for bodily injury to two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage.

Although every motorist is lawfully required to carry insurance, not all of them do. This is why South Dakota auto insurance law states that all drivers must have a policy that covers uninsured/underinsured motorists.

There are many motorists that have bad driving records which can often cause South Dakota auto insurance companies to deny their application for coverage. Since they need the coverage in order to drive in the state, they are able to contact the South Dakota Automobile Insurance Plan and submit an application. The main purpose is to find insurance for the denied applicants, as well as making sure the state knows that he or she tried getting insurance coverage but was denied.

Motorists that choose to ignore South Dakota auto insurance laws will find themselves receiving fines, jail time, and/or a suspended driver's license. For every citation that is issued, it will become that much harder for motorists to be covered under South Dakota auto insurance in the future.
