Iowa Auto Insurance 3309965

In the state of Iowa, residents are not compelled by law to have Iowa auto insurance. However, the Financial and Safety Responsibility Act affords residents protection from uninsured and reckless drivers. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the provisions of this law require that any driver or vehicle owner who has been in an accident must show proof of insurance immediately. If this driver or owner does not show proof of insurance, his/her driving and registration privileges will be suspended. In addition, the law also makes provisions regarding drivers who are convicted of a crime or who are guilty of a violation of the Operating While Intoxicated law. These drivers must show that they have Iowa auto insurance in the event that they cause damage or personal injury in the future. So, even though drivers in Iowa are not compelled to have auto insurance, there are risks involved with choosing not to get insurance coverage.

In the event of an automobile accident, the state of Iowa has opted to use the tort system for settling auto insurance claims. This means that the driver who caused the accident must pay all bills for medical treatment for personal injury as well as those for property damage. For this reason, drivers who opt to get auto insurance in the state of Iowa must adhere to certain minimum coverage amounts for liability. The minimum bodily injury coverage is $20,000 per person and $40,000 per occurrence, and the minimum coverage for property damage is $15,000 per occurrence. The state of Iowa does not require collision or comprehensive auto insurance, and it does not require insurance against uninsured or underinsured motorists.

If you are an Iowa resident and have chosen not to buy Iowa auto insurance, you can take comfort in the fact that the number of yearly auto accidents in Iowa ranks the state low on the list of U.S. states. However, you should keep in mind that the cost of settling the claims that result from each accident has been rising as repair and medical costs increase.
