California Auto Insurance

If you are a licensed driver in the state of sunny California and own and operate a motor vehicle, then you must carry and be prepared to furnish an "evidence of financial responsibility" at all times on California roadways. Specific changes to California law, as implemented in 2006, require the California Department of Motor Vehicles to frequently check and verify all driver's California Auto Insurance policies. Such reporting is usually done electronically in order to monitor and enforce the law. In California, if a driver is caught operating a vehicle without proper California Auto Insurance coverage, they will face such consequences as vehicle suspension and hefty fines.

According to California Auto Insurance codes, it is necessary for a driver to carry liability insurance at the very least. Comprehensive or collision insurance alone does not successfully meet California "vehicle financial responsibility" requirements. A driver's California Auto Insurance liability policy must include compensation coverage for a person other than the policy holder in the event of damages.

Minimum liability insurance requirements in the state of California are $15,000 for injury/death to one person, $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person and $5,000 for damage to property. Acceptable types of financial responsibility outlined by California law, other than vehicle liability insurance, are a cash deposit of $35,000 with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a DMV issued self-insurance certificate or a surety bond in the amount of $35,000 from a company who is licensed to conduct business in the state of California.

Because safety on the roadways is the primary concern, the state of California offers a program to low income residents of the state called the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program. This program provides the ability to get insured at a lower rate to those who otherwise would not be able to afford a California Auto Insurance policy.

Remember, obtaining sufficient California Auto Insurance coverage that meets the financial responsibility requirements can get expensive; even liability coverage is not cheap! Be sure to shop around for the best rates when comparing California Auto Insurance companies.
